It’s hard to imagine a better sort of device for playing RTSes than a flat slab of multitouch glass. Scrolling across massive terrains by pushing your mouse cursor continually felt labored, and navigating with a gamepad takes quite a bit of practice. In the iPad version of C&C, moving around your map is perfectly intuitive, with 1:1 dragging, or quicker movement by the use of a draggable map reticule. You pick a unit by tapping, and command it to move or attack with another. need to change the camera’s elevation?Pinch, zoom.

Some of the intuitiveness you gain with touch navigation, even if, you lose in more difficult maneuvers. Selecting many units needs you to tap an additional button, which turns on a election tool. Commanding units to do more than run or attack, or to move in groups, needs increasingly difficult series of taps, which generates for a somewhat steep learning curve, and causes your first few skirmishes to appear oppressively complicated. The graphics are sharp, colorful, and far more impressive than the C&C: RA you call to mind from computer, but multiple of the models feel a bit large, which can commit the screen seem cramped.
